ENGLISH

LOWER SECONDARY: 11 TO 14 YEARS

Lower Secondary English focuses on building strong communication skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It plays a crucial role in developing pupils’ ability to express themselves effectively, think critically, and understand the world around them.

Reading

Reading forms the foundation of language development. Pupils are exposed to a wide range of literary genres, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama. They learn to comprehend, interpret, and analyse texts, while developing vocabulary, fluency, and reading comprehension skills. Pupils are encouraged to become independent readers who enjoy literature and engage with diverse texts.

Writing

Pupils learn various forms of writing, such as narratives, descriptive and persuasive essays, reports, and reviews. They focus on developing coherent and well-structured compositions, expanding their vocabulary, refining grammar and punctuation, and editing their work for clarity and precision. Through regular writing exercises and feedback, pupils become confident and proficient writers.

Speaking and Listening

Pupils engage in activities that develop their ability to express themselves orally, participate in discussions, deliver presentations, and actively listen to others. Through debates, role-plays, and group discussions, they build confidence, articulate their ideas, and develop effective communication strategies.

Language Study

Pupils explore the mechanics of language, including grammar, syntax, and vocabulary, to enhance their understanding and usage. By analysing texts and examining language features, they develop a critical awareness of how language functions in different contexts and genres.
