THE PROGRESSIVE PROGRAM

UPPER SECONDARY: 14 TO 19 YEARS

IGCSE Biology

Exam Board: Pearson Edexcel

IGCSE Biology explores the study of living organisms and their interactions with the world around them. It serves as an excellent foundation for Biology at A level and appeals to those with a general interest in the natural world and the living organisms that inhabit it. Throughout the course, pupils delve into the workings of cells, the coordination of organisms, genetic inheritance, ecological relationships, and more. Practical experiments play a significant role in developing a deeper understanding of Biology.

The subject encompasses five main areas of study, each with its own chapters and lessons:

Cells and Organisation: Topics include cell structure, division, digestive systems, and the organization of animals and plants.

Disease and Bioenergetics: This section covers communicable and non-communicable diseases, as well as photosynthesis and respiration.

Biological Responses: pupils explore the human nervous system, hormonal coordination, and homeostasis in action.

Genetics and Reproduction: This area focuses on reproduction, variation, evolution, and genetics.

Ecology: Topics include adaptations, interdependence, competition, ecosystem organization, biodiversity, and ecosystems.

Biology suits individuals with a natural curiosity about the world and a passion for conservation, as well as those interested in understanding the human body or exploring the microscopic world. The course encompasses a diverse range of topics to cater to different interests.

It is important to note that Biology is a challenging subject. It requires a "can do" attitude, a strong command of the English language, and the ability to quickly grasp new terms. Logical thinking and effective communication using precise language are essential. Additionally, having good mathematical skills is advantageous in studying Biology.
