The Edexcel International GCSE in English as a Second Language is designed for pupils who receive their secondary education through English as the medium of instruction. The qualification benchmarks achievement against the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
The course focuses on developing pupils' English language competence through realistic and contextualized tasks based on authentic texts. It assesses reading, writing, and listening skills through examination papers, while speaking skills are assessed through an optional face-to-face interview. The qualification targets a range of abilities, from level B1 (intermediate) to C1 (advanced) of the CEFR.
The assessment is externally conducted, and there is an option for an additional speaking endorsement.
